Detail of New Caledonia

Oct - Nov, 2000

This detail of New Caledonia shows the general plan. isle des Pins is the speck at lower right, where we have annotated the map with locations of our two favorite anchorages. The full size map contains hot spot links to the relevant photo pages of this site. When your cursor passes over a hot spot link the arrow will change to the pointing finger cursor.

On our next visit, likely in 2002, we plan to circumnavigate the main island, visiting the Loyaute islands to the east on the way back to another visit to Isle des Pins.

Tasmania

Mar, 2000 to Mar, 2001

"God's Little Island" is what locals call this magical island. Smack in the "roaring fourties", but well worth the effort to sail here.

You really need navigation charts to appreciate the cruising opportunities around Tasmania. Second best are the detail maps which are accessible from the map at right.

Decisions, ... which route to Chile?

Tasmanians and New Zealanders naturally think of the route shown in yellow. Sail East from Tasie, through the strait between N and S islands of NZ, stop in Wellington if the weather is looking chancy. Thence right along 45° South Latitude to Puerto Mont, which is northernmost settlement of the Chilean Archipelago.

This may be our route as well. Our friends on Rosinante did it this way, returning in 2000 to Tasie via Cape of Good Hope.

But if we choose this route, we'll miss Alaska, Pacific Northwest, Mexico, etc. on this end of our cruise. And it isn't all that easy to get back to the North Pacific, then circle back to home in New Zealand.

Decisions, ... which route to Chile?

The purple route represents our original rough planning: Oceania to Hawaii to Alaska and south, thence to Atlantic either via the "ditch" or via Patagonia.

The yellow route represents the "shortcut". Difficult choices - we are keen to cruise the Med, Ireland, Baltic, etc., to spend some extended time in favorite places such as Turkey and Yugoslavia. Not to mention the canals of Europe, France especially.
